DSA at Lin Barrie Art Studio in Borrowdale Brook Estate

The DSA team had the privilege of visiting renowned Zimbabwean artist Mrs. Lin Barrie at her art studio in Borrowdale Brooke Estate on 26 May.

The visit offered a truly enriching experience, combining a warm and welcoming home atmosphere with the beauty of a carefully maintained garden environment. Guests were captivated by the studio’s exceptional ambiance and remarkable artworks, which vividly reflect the artist’s passion for authentic representations of African wild dogs, as well as themes of wine, food, traditional art, dance, and responsible tourism.

Living between Chief Mahenye’s Village, the Save Valley Conservancy, and Harare, Lin Barrie’s artistic practice is deeply intertwined with people, ecosystems, and biodiversity. Her work encompasses life drawing, field sketches, painting, earth pigments, printmaking, fibre art, collages made from found objects, and bark dyes. Through the use of multimedia techniques and indigenous materials abundantly available in her diverse surroundings, she creates richly layered and meaningful artworks.

Among her works are striking monoprints created in the field and inspired by indigenous palms, traditional dance, music, and ceremonial attire, including xibelani (chibabela) skirts, an integral element of xangana culture. These cultural expressions take different forms across regions influenced by tsonga, hlengwe, and ndau traditions throughout Gaza Land—the southeastern part of Zimbabwe and neighboring xangana communities in Mozambique and South Africa.

Printmaking, her major field of study at art college, continues to play an increasingly important role in her artistic practice. She creatively incorporates recycled and discarded materials, such as old styrofoam apple trays, transforming them into rhythmic patterns that evoke music, storytelling (Ngano), and cultural narratives on her painted canvases.

DSA guests thoroughly enjoyed viewing the current exhibition, guided by the artist herself. The presentation offered a fascinating journey through the history, culture, customs, and traditions of Zimbabwean communities, all in one place. The experience was further enhanced by excellent refreshments and the generous hospitality of our host.

This unforgettable and inspiring event left a lasting impression on the DSA team and opened the door to potential future partnerships and collaborative projects with our esteemed host, Mrs. Lin Barrie.

We extend our sincere gratitude and best wishes for her continued success. Her unique and extraordinary work challenges audiences, inspires visitors, and creates a profound sense of emotion, passion, and artistic discovery.
